  • We're looking for a Field Monitoring Officer to help us deliver and collect quality environmental monitoring. You'll take a range of samples including river water quality, effluents, bathing water, invertebrates, diatoms and groundwater boreholes.

You will work towards qualifying as an Officer in Charge for electric fishing surveys and will be involved in boat work, so experience of fieldwork and biosecurity good practice is essential.

You will be using a scheduling tool and utilising this technology to enhance delivery. You will maintain, interpret, and input into monitoring systems. You'll lead on the ordering of sampling equipment and maintaining the bottle & fishery stores. You will be an effective communicator, liaising with site contacts, members of the public and internal customers. You will train and mentor other team members to ensure consistent delivery to a high standard.
The field work can be physically demanding, and you will be required to sample in all weathers.

You'll be working alone for long periods of time, so you'll need to prioritise your Health, Safety and wellbeing, be self-motivated and organised.

The role will also support the Environment Agency's Incident response.

  • We collect fieldbased samples and environmental data for both local priority and national statutory requirements. The data collected provides key information to serve diverse community and environmental needs.
The West Midland Monitoring Field Team is based at Tewkesbury (GL20) and Lichfield (WS13). You will be also expected to cross boundaries to support other teams. This is a field-based role and requires long, extensive driving in urban and rural locations.

  • Experience/skills required 1
  • A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

Experience/Skills required:

  • Field sample collection experience (this role collects water samples for chemical analysis and Freshwater macroinvertebrates for example)
  • Training and mentoring staff
  • Able to work independently as part of a dispersed team
  • Good organisational skills
  • Working in water confidently and safely
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers
  • Required to use standard IT packages to deliver work as well as more specialised systems
  • Experience of health, safety and wellbeing procedures including carrying out risk assessments

Desirable:

  • Electric fishing experience
  • Freshwater fish identification
  • Experience of biosecurity procedures
  • Contact and additional information 1You will be provided with a badged vehicle. The base location for this role is Preferably Riversmeet House Tewkesbury GL20 8JG or possibly Sentinel House Lichfield WS13 8RR where you will drop off samples most days. Most of the time you will be outside collecting data from locations across Hereforsdhire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, and West Midlands combined authority.
