AKTON recruitment is working closely with the local authorities and we are looking for an experienced Drug and Alcohol Worker in the Barnsley area months contract.


We are looking for a committed, enthusiastic and experienced Drug and Alcohol Worker to form part of our Young Peoples Substance Misuse Team.

Our current service is going through a remodelling process to form an All Age Substance Misuse delivery model.

As such, we are looking for some short term support to manage clients seamlessly and their support requirements through the transfer process.


The postholder will be expected to have the skills and ability to engage young people and vulnerable adults by delivering a range of evidence based interventions, empowering them to reduce risk, increase personal and familial resilience, improve health and wellbeing and to lead a safe, happy and healthy life, either independently or in partnership with other agencies and providers around their own drug and alcohol use, or being affected by someone else's drug and alcohol use.


Duties will include:


  • Delivery of personalised support plans which focus on improving resilience, participation, achievement, attainment, positive lifestyle choices and improving health and wellbeing.
  • To deliver phases of interventions from Early Intervention to Structured Treatment Interventions
- ensuring that all aspects of confidentiality are adhered to and consent to share information is in line with the Caldicott principles which is paramount to build trusting therapeutic alliances.

  • To ensure that children, young people, and families are engaged with, comprehensively assessed, risk assessed, support planned and suitably reviewed, to address their substance use (or that of someone else's drug and alcohol use) and other related outcomes from point of entry to posttreatment support
  • Responsibility for the development and delivery of an early intervention and prevention offer, improving recovery capital, increasing resilience, improving health and wellbeing outcomes which involves leading and providing supervisory support to sessional colleagues and volunteers.
  • Support the development of positive peer support networks, where appropriate.
  • To work as part of a multidisciplinary function ensuring referrals and pathways are appropriate to the presenting level of needs and risk and that effective and responsive deployment of resources is in line with customer and service requirements to achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • Compile intelligence/evidence packages to inform the effective deployment of resources to ensure the delivery of timely, coordinated, and appropriate interventions in line with demand, service policies and procedures.
  • To always act as an appropriate role model for children and young people and provide advocacy to them and their parents/carers when required, at relevant agency meetings.

Care Quality Commission/ National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, National Drug Treatment Monitoring Service (NDTMS, BMBC), Caldicott, guidelines around confidentiality and consent to share information.


  • Ensure the timely and accurate collection, recording and reporting of specified local and NDTMS data using the designated Case Management Information System.
  • To work collaboratively with multiagency partners and refer on where appropriate to ensure the holistic needs of children, young people and families are met through their support plan goals
  • Work with prescribing clinicians to support substitute prescribing regimes to improve social functioning where required.
  • To provide health education in regard to harm minimisation advice and information, blood borne viruses and overdose prevention in line with evidencebased practices and NICE guidelines.
  • To carry out harm reduction strategies such as delivering access to Needle Exchange and supporting access to Blood Borne Virus Screening and vaccination to children, young people, and their families.
  • Deliver training and consultation to the Children and Young People's Workforce on issues facing young people around substance misuse
