We are looking for a postdoctoral research assistant to join our team working on the BUTTON neutrino test facility that will be installed in the Boulby underground laboratory.

You will make substantial contributions to the construction and installation of the encapsulated optical modules of the experiment and participate in operations and data collection.

The Opportunity:

BUTTON, is a small scale test facility being developed for the Boulby underground facility in North Yorkshire.

This 30 tonne Water Cherenkov detector will be able to run with novel fill material (e.g., Gd loading or water-based liquid scintillator) and will also deploy advanced photosensors such as LAPPDs.

Our group has responsibility for the testing and installation of the 10" Photomultiplier tubes that form the heart of the optical detection system of the experiment.

These PMTs must be encapsulated into acrylic enclosures that we have designed to separate them from the fill media. Over the next two years the PMT encapsulation will be completed, and the modules installed underground at Boulby. As a PDRA, you will be at the heart of this process.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Possess, or be about to obtain a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics
  • Proven track record of performing high quality research in experimental particle physics with an emphasis on detector development
  • Good working knowledge of Python and C++ programming languages
  • Ability to selfmotivate and work independently
  • Ability to work as part of a team while showing leadership and initiative
