Hybrid - 1 to 2 days a week in Swindon


As part of a team, you will need to work proactively and collaboratively to develop a sophisticated understanding of the Simpler Better Funding Programme and the Reforming Out Business agenda.

Working closely with the Engagement Lead and Communications Manager, and wider programme members, your role is to ensure the programme provides the right level of engagement with selected stakeholders.

You will act as a relationship manager with stakeholders to ensure good levels of engagement and that stakeholder needs are met.

You will also support councils and their external contacts and users to ensure that key messages are delivered consistently and in a timely manner in line with prevailing activity.


As a Engagement Manger your main responsibilities would be:

  • Lead on the engagement of selected stakeholders to ensure that they are properly engaged and informed about SBF
  • Work in coordination with engagement and communications colleagues to get the support you need and to support others to meet their stakeholder needs
  • Support the development of messaging and communications to support SBF introduction and adoption
  • Support colleagues in the wider programme and in Councils as they engage with stakeholders
  • Direct engagement with stakeholders at meetings, presentations, events and webinars under the remit of the programme's Engagement lead
  • Drafting stakeholder collateral in coordination with our Communications manager, and Council and UKRI communications teams as required
  • Planning, development, execution and evaluation of campaigns and programmes of messaging, engagement and communications and supporting others to do the same
  • Supporting and leading other engagement activities as necessary
  • Promoting knowledge sharing and adoption of good practice within the Programme and UKRI.

You'll have relevant experience in:


  • Stakeholder management: You know how to understand who our stakeholders are, what matters to them and how to plan and deliver effective ways to engage them to meet the goals of the programme
  • Communication and messaging: while you may not be a communications professional, you understand the important of effective messaging and can help shape strategic and tactical campaigns to communicate key messages
  • Campaign and project planning: You know how to plan engagement to achieve specific goals, how to deliver against these plans and how to measure and report progress and outcomes.
  • Ability to relate stakeholder concerns to strategic outcomes: You know how to identify, understand and frame stakeholder issues and concerns so that these issues can be addressed through effective engagement and communication to help deliver the strategic goals of the programme
  • Team player: You are comfortable working with colleagues in different programme workstreams or in Research Councils to support engagement
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and problem solving: You are good at working within ambiguous situations and in structuring solutions quickly to make progress and resolve them
  • Provide services where needed with a particular focus on data security and privacy concepts including data protection.

  • Public sector experience, ideally in higher education, research and/or grant funding operations
  • Please be aware that this role can only be worked within the UK and not Overseas._
