Job description:
If this appeals to you, a career at Natural England offers rewarding opportunities to secure environmental improvements and play your part in creating a better future for people and nature.
The priority work Natural England is delivering includes:
- Establishing a Nature Recovery Network to help wildlife thrive
- Monitoring environmental changes to identify and help reduce the effects of climate change
- Working with farmers and landowners to develop greener food production methods
- Advising on plans for new developments to maximise gains for nature, and
- Providing ways for people to better connect with nature, including green social prescribing.
We are the Government's Adviser for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government's 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious vision which brings new opportunities to protect and enhance and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.
The Role:
This role presents an exciting opportunity to work for a new strategic partnership of Natural England, National Trust, and a major UK funder, to improve urban greenspace for people and nature.
We are looking for a Principal Adviser in Green Finance and Investment to join the Urban Greening team within Natural England on a fixed term until March 2026.
The successful post holder will be working closely with the partners.
Together, we aim to inspire, incentivise and reward urban local authorities and their partners to take ambitious action for people, nature and climate by increasing access to high quality natural spaces and green infrastructure in towns and cities.
This role is a direct response to the 2023 Environmental Improvement Plan's ambitions to develop an accreditation scheme to improve the landscapes of cities and towns and ensure equitable access to green and blue space in areas with high environmental and social need.
This role will focus on how we turn this ambition into action by unlocking private finance and funding in urban greening, as a core part of blended funding models.
The successful post holder will bring green finance and funding skills and experience into the partnership, with a particular focus on finance for nature in urban areas:
- You will be required to work across public, private and third sector organisations to develop a partnership approach that brings together potential investors, investable projects, and coordinate a framework for urban greening investment, supported by an investment/funder advisory panel.
- You will work to overcome challenges and grow the capacity and confidence of key partners including local authorities in developing approaches to green finance and funding, and where appropriate social finance.
- You will need to be able to challenge constructively, facilitate discussion, and demonstrate change leadership for this work area to help embed change, and bring people with you.
- You will need an understanding of policy development, influencing, and of working in collaboration with government.
- External relationships are critical to the success of the initiative and a key part of this role. You will need to understand the key existing and new partners and stakeholders and will work in collaboration with the partners on green finance stakeholder engagement.
Key tasks:
- Work with partners and their green finance teams to develop a shared framework for investment in urban green space including the development of an urban greening project pipeline.
- Support the development of public, private and third sector partnerships to increase funding and finance for urban green space and natural infrastructure.
- Make links across government on green finance work and work to develop fiscal and economic incentives for urban greening.
- Influencing standards and reporting for nature investment that builds trust and confidence across the sector.
- Develop relationships with potential investors and funders and establish an advisory inv
