About The Role
The Legal Function manages legal risk across the Society.

It is also responsible for ensuring the Society complies with relevant data protection requirements and has appropriate insurance arrangements in place.

The capabilities and role of the Function haveincreased substantially in recent years, reflecting the growth of the Society and its broader ambitious transformation agenda.

The Function has been recognized externally for its activities, in particular its use of technology to transform the way in whichlegal services are provided.

To assist in the delivery of key legal services, we are looking for a talented counsel.

This is a key role, working closely with junior and senior colleagues in the team, contributing directly and working with external counsel to deliver a range of objectives.

Working directly and closely with senior management you will establish yourself as a reliable trusted advisor to the business and provide input on a variety of projects to support the business.

Reporting to the Lead Legal Counsel, Operations the role holder will:
(i) Commercial Contracts

  • Provide day to day legal advice related to a variety of strategic commercial matters.
  • Assist with reviewing, drafting, negotiating and structuring of a broad range of commercial contracts, including material and nonmaterial outsourcing services agreements, goods and services agreements, IT services agreements such as Cloud and SaaS arrangements.
  • Advising business and leading on disputes arising under such contracts.
  • Proactive participation in contract management, ensuring processes are in place to ensure contracts are operated according to their terms, and creating and governing a clear process for contract management.
(i) Other Legal Practice Areas

  • Providing prompt, effective and commercial legal support in relation to, competition, IP, sponsorships/marketing relationships and property areas of practice.
  • Advising on legal impacts arising from regulatory change and implementing actions to enable compliance with such requirements.
  • Developing precedents and streamlining processes to help improve efficiency of legal support.
About You

You'll be admitted to practice law either as a Solicitor or a Barrister in England and Wales and must hold a current practicing certificate with three years plus experience.

Ideally you will have worked in-house previously, gaining broad ranging exposure toa range of issues.
A background in a regulated industry would be desirable but no essential.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong organisational skills and judgement, excellent analysis, drafting and negotiationskills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects, effective business counselling and negotiation skills
  • Commercial law experience
  • Ability to operate with a good level of autonomy where required
  • A willingness to learn about other areas of law
