The maternity services at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are pleased to be recruiting a Consultant Midwife to join our inspirational leadership team.


We are looking to recruit a highly skilled individual with relevant and demonstrable experience in midwifery and a commitment to learning.

As the national landscape of maternity services evolves, the post holder will need to be able to confidently keep up to date with national strategy and drivers and be able to deliver successful change.


We are looking for an experienced midwife who can evidence excellent multidisciplinary team working and act as a credible and visible leader.


The primary functions of this role are:
expert midwifery practice and service development; professional leadership and consultancy; education and training; and research, audit and evaluation.


The key areas of focus will involve developing the choice and personalisation and continuity of carer agendas, reducing inequalities, ensuring evidence based practice, leading on strategic initiatives and working in close collaboration with key stakeholders including the LMNS to support the innovation and transformation of our maternity services in response to local and national strategy and emerging evidence.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing clinical leadership; supporting midwives to develop professionally by acting as a role model
  • Actively contribute to strategic planning of services
  • Lead the implementation of midwifery research and practice to enhance the body of midwifery knowledge
  • Actively participate in clinical audit and the development of evidencebased clinical standards of care. Ensure that recommendations from the National policy documents that relate to women and children's wellbeing, in particular Better Births, Ockenden, Kirkup reports and guidance from NICE and The Royal Colleges are implemented into practice.
  • Audit practice and service; evaluate maternity care and service provision and develop appropriate service to meet the needs of diverse groups [populations]
  • Share expertise and acts as a resource both internally and externally with health and social care
  • Work in the clinical environment 50 % of the time

The maternity service at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is proud to be able to offer 4 places of birth including birth at home, in a free standing birth centre, in an alongside birth centre and in an obstetric delivery suite.


With a home birth rate of over 3% and 3 established continuity teams personalised care is high on our agenda for all women and families.

The service has been identified as one of three North West Regional maternal medicine centres and the team are working towards an establishing this service to support women who experience more complex pregnancy.

The consultant midwife will lead on the promotion of expert midwifery care for women accessing care within the maternity services:

Work collaboratively with obstetricians and relevant physicians to plan, deliver and evaluate care for women with complex health and wellbeing needs, for example, those planning vaginal birth after caesarean section.


  • Develop and implement a system of referral, consultation, and care planning for women with complex needs who may be declining recommended options for care within the unit and at home.
  • Use evidencebased knowledge and skills to inform practice decisions, particularly where guidance does not exist.
  • Perform expert comprehensive assessment of the needs of service users, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs to ensure continuity of effective care
  • Provide expert practice in the management of women using the service, acting outside the normal scope of practice, across professional boundaries and with the highest level of personal and professional autonomy.
  • Inspire and support midwives to realise their full potential as autonomous practitioners and to optimise their skills in midwifery led care.
