CLINICAL Monitor and maintain high professional standards of Neurophysiological services to patients initiate remedial action where necessary Provide support and assistance to Neurophysiological staff in dealing with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical / professional nature.

Participate in the implementation of policies Independently plan, perform and interpret a range of Neurophysiological investigations to a high level of competence to patients.


This includes:

Perform Electroencephalographic (EEG) investigations using current standard techniques without supervision, taking appropriate action(s) where necessary Perform Emergency EEGs on ITU (Intensive Therapy Units), SCBUs (Special Care Baby Units) and general wards this could be at any hospital covered by the department and appropriate action should be taken where necessary Perform EEG investigations using special techniques.

These include recordings following sleep deprivation, sedation and during administration of medication (eg:
Lorazepam) Perform long term Ambulatory EEG monitoring with and without home video monitoring.


Perform Nerve Conduction Studies for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome screening Assist with EMG (Electromyography) examinations, NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies) Perform multimodality evoked potentials taking appropriate action(s) where necessary Provide written factual reports on all investigations carried out.

Contribute to the assessment, implementation and adaption of new clinical techniques and technologies.

Undertake fault remedy, cleaning and maintenance of recording equipment or any apparatus within the department including care and maintenance of electrodes.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Plan, implement and monitor education and training of Clinical Physiologists (Neurophysiology) and other staff groups in line with mandatory, professional and personal development according to service needs.

Remedial action taken as necessary. Promote staff compliance with CPD guidelines, professional codes of conduct and evaluate the effect of development on service delivery. Provide clinical supervision/mentorship for other staff. Assist in the Co-ordination and implementation of teaching and training programmes at all levels for Neurophysiology services.


Participate in the teaching and training programmes in Neurophysiology to a broad range of healthcare workers including medical, AHP, nursing, HCS etc.

Ensure personal compliance with regards to mandatory, professional and personal development according to service needs. Ensure personal compliance with CPD guidelines, professional codes of conduct and evaluate the effect of development on service delivery. Participate in audits and /or research and development programmes within the department/hospital.

Participate in Trust/Region wide projects.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE AND AUDIT Implement audit to ensure compliance with and development of professional and local policies and procedures and clinical standard/protocols/guidelines.

Facilitate patient and public involvement in the development of Neurophysiological service(s) Assist in investigating complaints regarding the service(s) and where required report the findings to the Trust in accordance with local procedures and to take remedial action if appropriate.

Work within agreed Trust and local policies and protocols Contribute to the formulation of health and safety and quality assurance policies to patients, staff and visitors.
