Senior Democratic Support officer:

Job description

Part Time / 15 Hours Per Week / Permanent


Play a key role in providing critical services to support the efficient operation of the Council's decision-making processes and the role of Councillors.

The Democratic Support Team aim to promote an effective and progressive service making the best use of innovative technology.

Join our team of 9 officers, to support key democratic decision making and involvement processes, such as support to Executive Boards, Health partnership arrangements, regulatory functions, and scrutiny work.

This is a great opportunity to enhance your knowledge of the Council and political process.

The team are operating a hybrid model of working, with an office base, along with meeting attendance at City Hall.

This is a part-time, permanent post working 15 hours per week usually on Monday and Tuesday. You'll be required to work flexible hours to take account of meetings you need to attend.


What you'll be doing


You'll be a leading member of the Democratic Support team providing leadership, supervision, advice, guidance and support to other members of the team.

You will also provide agenda management, detailed and accurate minute-taking service and associated committee support duties to the Council's more complex formal and informal high-level meetings.

This includes providing procedural advice to members, departments, and the public in respect of decision-making processes.

You'll manage and facilitate public access to meetings, including processes for the submission and consideration of questions, petitions, representations, and statements of case.

Liaising with Directors, Heads of Service, other officers, and external parties, you'll ensure there is clear communication in preparation for meetings.


What you'll need
You'll have experience within democratic services and servicing of meetings, working in the public sector.

With good understanding of relevant legislation and knowledge of council constitutions and other relevant local government policies, procedures, and protocols, you'll have good knowledge of IT to support decision-making processes.

You'll have proficient IT skills, to be able to provide practical and technical support for virtual / hybrid meetings, live streaming, and webcasting.

Using excellent interpersonal skills, you'll build and maintain strong working relationships with Councillors, officers at all levels, external organisations, and members of the public.

Due to the nature of the role, you'll have a high level of political awareness and sensitivity as well as demonstrate tact and impartiality.
