Applications are invited from enthusiastic researchers to participate in an exciting program of research on high fidelity simulation of heat transfer to fluid at supercritical pressure using direct numerical simulation (DNS).

The project is part of a large consortium supported by European Commission through H2020, which is aimed at developing an intrinsically safe Small Modular Reactors based on supercritical water technology (SMR-SCW).

In addition, you will also have the opportunity to work with EDF to support their fuel route thermal hydraulics modelling R&D.


Working alongside researchers from other partner organisations, you will be responsible for carrying out wall-resolved numerical simulations to complement physical experiments and support the validation/ development of turbulence and 1-D models.

The work will make use of a large eddy simulation (LES)/direct numerical simulation (DNS) computer code (CHAPSim) that has been developed in-house in Sheffield for supercritical as well as subcritical fluid flow and heat transfer.

You will particularly study the effect of roughness on turbulence and heat transfer. You will attend regular project meetings reporting your progress and contributing to discussions in other project areas.

In addition, you will also be involved in working on a project supporting EDF on developing modelling tools for the fuel route of advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR).

The open-source Code_Saturne computational fluid dynamics code will be used in this work.
