Role

Reporting to the Residential Life Team Leader you will work in a support role providing information, advice and guidance to students living in halls of residence.

Whilst it is primarily a Pastoral role you will also be responsible for managing behavioral issuesin halls, in line with university rules and regulations.

During busy periods you will also be required to work in the accommodation office assisting with the allocation of students for the coming academic year.

This role is 22 hours per week, for six months in the first instance.


Duties and responsibilities:


  • To provide information, advice and guidance to students living in university halls of residence.
  • To have a good understanding of student accommodation issues.
  • To effectively support students.
  • Provide a range of support services to an agreed quality standard or specification.
  • Provide efficient and effective administrative support within Student Services.
  • To monitor safety, security and the behaviour of residents; using judgement (and standardised procedures) when to intervene or refer.
  • Review service delivery and make suggestions for enhancement and to highlight areas of concern.
  • The ability to produce accurate detailed reports regarding daily occurrences or significant events.
  • Effectively represent the Service/ University to stakeholders (including applicants, students and landlords).
  • Respond and resolve a wide range of enquiries and problems, judging when to refer complex queries or involve others to provide an effective service.
  • Ensure colleagues are kept informed of operational issues as appropriate.
  • Involve colleagues in discussion and decision making as appropriate.
  • Maintain a network of contacts drawing on support and advice from others to resolve problems where possible.
  • Actively participate in various teams, working groups and committees.
  • Work within established processes and procedures;
  • The post holder will be expected to undertake other responsibilities and tasks as reasonably requested by the Residential Life Team Leader
  • To be responsible and accountable for ensuring all employment legislative requirements are adhered to including equality and diversity and health and safety issues.
  • The post holder may be required to participate in Open Days, Welcome Weekend and other key University events that may be outside the working week.

Skills and experience
Educated to GCSE/O Level or equivalent level qualifications or experience.
A well developed understanding of student issues.
Display an understanding of accommodation issues (private sector and/or halls of residence).
An awareness of issues relating to confidentiality, diversity and inclusion.
Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Outlook.

Ability to use interpersonal and communication skills to deal with a variety of customers sometimes in order to diffuse challenging situations.

Proven use of effective administrative skills to complete tasks.
The ability to undertake diagnostic questioning of clients and decide how to inform/advise/guide/ refer as appropriate.
Ability to prepare generic information for clients, in a variety of formats e.g. leaflets, handbook etc.
Ability to undertake verbal communication with clients and colleagues on a one to one and group basis.
Ability to encourage others through positive actions.

The ability to manage own personal day to day workload in keeping with service demands, within agreed timescales and as directed by the line manager.

Ability to work independently and pro-actively.
Ability to deal with periods of high workloads in a busy office environment effectively.
Ability to actively participate in teams, working groups and committees.
Ability to use sensitivity and empathy to meet the needs of a diverse range of customers.
Ability to adapt to organisational change.
Ability to adapt to technological advances in the workplace.
Ability to undertake tours of the halls of residence.
Able to work occasional weekends and evenings.
