Main Tasks and Responsibilities

Working within the team

  • To ensure the professional and organisational requirements are respected and met during the delivery of advice.
  • To assist the senior colleagues and Casework Team Manager in order to drive efficiency, quality, systems improvement and target achievement.
Casework and advice

  • To offer advice, advocacy and support to service users with various aspects related to their welfare as requested by the management of RMC and funders' requirements.
  • To maintain confidentiality in all dealings with service users and ensure their needs are met in a satisfactory and sensitive manner.
  • To provide appropriate support and mentoring to any volunteers under supervision.
  • To represent RMC at external meetings and events when required by the senior colleagues.
  • To maintain effective working relationships with partners and stakeholders.

Person Specification

Experience and Skills Essential Desirable

1 At least 5 years' experience in an advice-giving role or equivalent, in particular welfare benefits, housing, health and other generalist advice areas and experience of advice work dealing with asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants x

2 Experience working in a multicultural environment and sensitivity towards other cultures x

3 Educated to degree level or equivalent x

4 A proven record of teamwork and flexibility x


5 Proficient in conveying complex information with clarity and empathy, while demonstrating a friendly and understanding approach to engaging with individuals.

6 Excellent communication skills along with good presentation and interpersonal skills. x

7 Able to deliver high-quality written work under tight deadlines and showcasing strong organisational skills. x

8 Adept at managing and prioritising tasks with professionalism, even in high-pressure situations. x

9 Commitment to equality and diversity x

10 Commitment to work towards OISC or other qualifications in our key service areas relevant to the role x

11 An ability to self-motivate and work independently x

12 Strong listening skills with the ability to set professional boundaries to prevent getting emotionally involved. x

What's in it for you?

Location Birmingham, Wolverhampton or Walsall

Pension RMC will contribute 3% of gross basic salary

Holidays 21 days per year plus public holidays pro rata for part-time post. Holiday entitlement increases to 24 days after 2 years and 29 days after 5 years

Hours of Work 35 hours per week (excluding lunch breaks). Some evening and weekend work may be required for which time off in lieu should be claimed

Probation This post will have a probationary period of 6 months

Notice One month's notice of termination of employment on either side

Travel expenses If travel around the Black Country is undertaken in your own vehicle for work purposes this can be reclaimed at the rate of 45 pence per mile

Training Access to external paid training and regular internal training provided by Senior Caseworkers. Commitment to supporting you to develop and upskill in the field of immigration and asylum
