£11.20 an hour is the initial rate of pay for the training period, which will increase to £12.20 an hour upon successful completion of training and ability to work in a one-to-one capacity.

Job Description

  • A personal assistant is required to support a very happy and energetic 13yearold boy. He is nonverbal and has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. He likes to run and bounce around, and has a swing, trampoline, a bubble tube, a hot tub, and many other things he loves to play with at his home. He also enjoys a range of sensory activities such as ripping up paper, music, and water play.


He enjoys company and is very sociable, but also likes his own space; it is important to follow his lead of body language and use PEC symbols to find out what he wants.

He is very happy if he feels able to make his own choices.

He has learning difficulties, impaired verbal and non-verbal communication and limited play and self-help skills. He requires high levels of monitoring and support to keep him safe.

He can become easily frustrated when he is unable to express what he wants. This can sometimes lead to self-injurious behaviour as well as aggression towards others.


He is keen to adhere to instructions as much as he can and likes to be helpful, and with a small amount of encouragement will pick up his toys, hang up his coat and put rubbish in the bin.

He can become very anxious when changes to routine occur and may refuse to engage in new activities. He has a limited awareness of surrounding dangers, such as roads.

He has a very good sense of balance and control and is very careful and sure-footed when on walks in the countryside.

Key Responsibilities

  • Training will be provided to ensure you are able to fulfil these responsibilities:
Preparation of food, snacks, and drinks


Nature walks and days out, he requires a high level of supervision, whilst allowing him to play and enjoy himself.

His hand must be held when crossing roads and walking next to roads. Avoid busy places.

Be able to manage situations where frustration arises, employing strategies to prevent self-injury and aggression towards others.

Reminding and taking him to go to the toilet, and offering assistance.

Encouraging the continued use of Makaton.

Activities such as visits to the cinema.

Constant care and supervision is required at all times.

All these tasks will be discussed further at interview. Any other duties not mentioned that fall within the scope of this role should be discussed and mutually agreed.

A full UK driver's license is desirable, but not essential.

Additional Information


Shift patterns will be mutually agreed, with the objective that they can easily fit around other jobs/duties you may have, this can be in the form of 2 (longer) shifts or 3-4 (shorter) shifts per month, depending on what is preferred.

Following a successful interview, applicants are required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) and two satisfactory references are conditional for the post.
