This is an exciting opportunity to lead Sheffield Health & Social Care's Green Plan as we aim to become a sustainable organisation and deliver on the NHS Net Zero targets.

Our Green plan outlines our vision to achieve Net Zero targets by 2030 (scope 1 emissions) working across the region and with city partners to deliver positive change.


You will be responsible for leading the Green Plan and to report on the priorities of the Strategy to the newly formed Sustainable Development Group.

This group consists of leads for each area who will work collaboratively to delivery projects across the organisation.


TheSustainability Green Plan Leadis key to Sheffield Health & Social Care Trust's Sustainability strategy and will help lead plans to meet sustainability responsibilities.

As part of the NHS commitment to deliver a 'Net Zero' National Health Service and the NHS Long Term Plan Embedding Sustainability across the organisation this role plays a key part of the organisations Strategy.


  • To lead the operational delivery of the Green Plan at Sheffield Health & Social Care NHS.
  • To manage and control the Green Plan action plan programme, including progress reporting and future plans.
  • To actively manage the Net Zero targets to match national targets for scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
  • Operates independently and is a lead specialist for key areas (Sustainability)
  • To engage with stakeholders and departments across the organisation to reduce the amount of waste, increase reuse and increase recycling.
  • To lead the organisation's change programme on Travel and Transport to increase more sustainable travel e.g., cycle to work, walk to work, bus and public transport use, car sharing and low carbon vehicles.
  • To manage schemes that improve sustainability in the Trust's green spaces, including tree planting, gardening, and biodiversity activities.
  • Ensure the Trust's effective communication and participation of sustainability awareness days and develop plans to ensure the awareness enhances the Trust's ongoing sustainability.
  • Ensure all statutory requirements and standards are met, including those set out in the NHS contract regarding Sustainability
  • To ensure robust and effective sustainability performance monitoring systems are in place, manage reporting to the Sustainability Group.
TheSustainability Green Plan Leadwill provide comprehensive senior level expertise and be accountable for the operational delivery of a range of sustainability initiatives as Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust delivers the Green Plan


This will include:

  • To lead the operational delivery of the Green Plan at Sheffield Health & Social Care NHS.
This will involve engaging Trust Board, Senior Leadership, multiple directorates/teams, wider stakeholders and service users to develop a Green Plan that fits organisational Strategy.

  • Strategic Carbon reduction advise organisational strategy to help drive change to a low carbon future operations.
  • Participating in relevant internal and external working groups/projects, services and initiatives to provide information, analytical advice and expertise in Sustainability matters.
  • To work with regional partners and the ICB to report progress against Green Plan targets. Ensure that progress and targets align with regional Green Plan and National targets.


An excellent communicator is required, with the passion and drives to embed sustainability across SHSC, promote and maintain a culture of high performance and help to position the Trust as an exemplar for sustainability in the healthcare sector.


This role will involve close working with stakeholders across the organisation to reduce waste, increase re use/recycling and reduce the organisations impact on the environment.

The role will be the Trust lead for Sustainability

  • To provide a comprehensive high quality information service to support business planning processes.
  • To provide high quality data, information, and analysis to enable performance management against local, regional, and national benchmarks.
  • To be responsible for Sustainability information returns e.g., ERIC, PAM, Greener NHS Quarterly Data Collection
  • To be responsible for information resources, statistical reports, and query reports on multiple Sustainability data sets.
  • To interoperate national guidance on Sustainability and use specialist knowledge and experience to establish in which was the organisation should implement.
  • Collecting contract performance data to manage contract KPIs.
  • Provide complex information to relevant staff when there are changes to environmental legislation. Communicate compliance issues, which lead either to a need to manage existing waste streams in a new way or to develop new ones.
  • Responsibility to obtain data needed to complete the SDAT tool on behalf of the organisation to understand the impact that operations have on Carbon emissions. This will require providing and receiving complex information and communicati
