The responsibilities for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for 2023 are as follows:

Delivering security of energy supply
Ensuring properly functioning energy markets
Encouraging greater energy efficiency
Seizing the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries

For 2023, our priorities are:

Ensure security of energy supply this winter, next winter and in the longerterm bringing down energy bills and reducing inflation.
Ensure the UK is on track to meet its legally binding Net Zero commitments and support economic growth by significantly speeding up delivery of network infrastructure and domestic energy production.
Improve the energy efficiency of UK homes, businesses and public sector buildings to meet the 15% demand reduction ambition.
Deliver current schemes to support energy consumers with their bills and develop options for longterm reform to improve how the electricity market works for families and businesses.
Seize the economic benefits of Net Zero, including the jobs and growth created through investment in new green industries.

Job description:

The role and our team

The UK is a world leader in the commercialisation of fusion energy, a technology that could revolutionise how the world thinks about and uses energy in the future.

With recent breakthroughs in fusion technology and commercial investment growing, the work of the Government's Fusion Team in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is rapidly expanding.

The Team is responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of the UK's Fusion Strategy, helping the UK Atomic Energy Authority (the UK's national fusion laboratory) deliver its globally unique programmes and facilities, and developing new initiatives to develop the fusion supply chain, encourage investment, develop partnerships across the globe and continue to drive world-leading science in fusion.

This includes the delivery of the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP), a programme to build a prototype fusion power station.

Policy and Projects Officer:
Fusion Governance and PMO

This role is responsible for developing and maintaining the Government's governance arrangements and programme management approaches that are necessary for the effective delivery of the UK Fusion Strategy. The postholder will act as secretariat to a new senior crossgovernment board that will oversee the delivery of the UK's Fusion Strategy.

The postholder will also:

oversee the team's pipeline of business cases (that make the case for public investment in fusion projects); project-manage the team's programme of work on fusion regulation; and support the Government's oversight of the STEP programme (to build a fusion power plant in the UK by 2040) by arranging independent technical assurance reviews.

While this role will focus on project management and governance, there will be the opportunity for the postholder to take on additional policy responsibilities in these and other areas as they arise.
