The Gallery generates an important part of its own running costs from a variety of commercial activities and has developed a high profile Rights & Images function, which comprises brand and image licensing and Intellectual Property ("IP") expertise.


With over 330,000 portraits in the collection, the Rights & Images department licenses reproduction rights to a range of clients worldwide, as well as running a brand and merchandise licensing programme, picture research and rights clearance of 3rd partycontent, on-site location filming, and intellectual property advice, training and support to the Gallery.


Reporting to the Picture Library Manager, the Intellectual Property & Brand Licensing Officer is responsible for the management of IP information throughout the Gallery, and working with the external brand licensing agent, leads and develops the Gallery'sBrand licensing programme.


Key Accountabilities

  • Researches and maintain clear records relating to the IP status of Gallery works, whether Collection or nonCollection and ensures best practice relating to all types of Gallery IP (including copyright, trademarks, designs, database rights, moral rights,publication rights, artist's resale rights and confidential information is adhered to by supporting and advising teams across the organization.
  • Leads on the development and implementation of a strategic brand licensing programme, actively proposing new ideas and progressing direct partnerships with potential licensees while also liaising closely with the external Brand licensing agent.

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience and success in an IP/copyright or licensing role, ideally within the cultural and heritage sector.
  • A proven track record of working on complex IP issues within a business environment and good contacts within the IP world.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering results through clear and careful management of IP issues.
  • A clear understanding and appreciation of the issues facing all rights holders, particularly in the public sector, and how best to protect the Gallery's IP alongside the ability to identify commercial opportunities in this area.
