Your New Role:


We have a fantastic opportunity for a fix-term contract covering maternity leave role of Operational Controller to join our Kent in our Aylesford depot, ME20 7BU.

This is hybrid role where you have possibility to work 3 days out of 5 from home once your training will be completed.


The salary for this role is £23,000.


Amey has been working in partnership with Kent County Council since 2013, with a team of 150 operatives we deliver a full range of highways maintenance services from road and footway repairs and improvement schemes to gritting.

We provide 24-hour emergency cover for any incidents on the road network as well as investment in the highway's infrastructure.

By investing in local infrastructure, we aim to improve the county's highways, benefiting the community and people by keeping the towns and cities moving.

Operational Controller plays an important part in our daily on-site system operations.

You will manage the daily activities of gangs/operations against programme, including direct contact with gangs when appropriate, in line with agreed timescales and in accordance with SLAs and commercial contract.

You will be also responsible for maximisation of the productivity, the resources through reduction in wasted time, materials and operational costs, as well you will be liaising with Supervisors, provide updates of performance.


The standard hours of work are 40 hours per week, starting at 8am with finish at 5pm. Flexibility is available around your working hours.

You will be responsible for:


  • Approval of draft resource programme, also reviews of suspended and rejected jobs on the system
  • Coordination with supervisors in the event of onsite issues and reviews of quality of programme with preworks coordinators
  • Produce daily and weekly report of gang activity and performance data
  • Liaise, schedule and coordination of emergency and less than 24 hour works (current day) if required for P1 priorities
  • Keep client updated on planned work activity
  • Communication with all parties to ensure daily performance targets are met
  • Deliver and continuously improve service levels
  • Raise health and safety concerns through close call process
  • Monitor P1-P3 scheduled works for start of work status to ensure permits submitted on time
  • Minimise cancellation of permits by adjusting works programme
  • Site visits with client to understand the process of raising works orders
  • Site visits with gang to see works in progress
Site visits to see different areas of business to widen understanding of contract, including schemes, specialist treatments and ancillary.

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Competency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience of working on a Highways Maintenance Contract
  • Great communication skills that enable influencing at all levels of the business
  • Good team working skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with a breadth of customers and stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively with financial and nonfinancial stakeholders
  • Good organizational and planning skills able to work independently and prioritise workload within busy and targetdriven environment
  • Analytical thinking can use data to drive operational and cost improvements
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Commercial Awareness understand SLAs and KPI; general understanding of billing
Ideally you will have experience in planning/co-ordination for Transport Infrastructure, specifically Highways Maintenance, and excellent organisation skills.


In addition to this, it would be desirable if you have good geographical knowledge beneficial to help you hit the ground running, although this is not essential as we will provide you with the required development you need to bring you up to speed.
