Key Responsibilities

  • Vote analysis and execution
  • Undertake research and analysis of ESG factors in sectors and companies in support of stewardship activities (voting and engagement)
  • Assist Senior Analyst and Head of Responsible Investment with the prioritization and implementation of engagement strategies
  • Liaise with external research providers
  • Assist the team with portfolio monitoring reviews and associated analysis
  • Represent the fund at appropriate external meetings, as required
  • Support other RI team members in their delivery of the USS RI strategy and activities including, when required, undertaking external manager due diligence, assessment and monitoring.

Primary Measures

  • Voting of proxies in line with agreed policy and, where relevant, in discussion with portfolio managers and analysts
  • Provision of relevant research across asset classes
  • Act on feedback from public markets analysts and PMs on research and engagement activities
  • Feedback from RI team members on the successful operation of the team in its delivery of all objectives
  • High quality interactions both internally and with external parties to uphold and enhance USS and RI's reputation
  • Assist in maintaining stewardship records

General skills and experience:


  • A strong interest in and understanding of ESG / Responsible Investment issues
  • Selfstarter with an ability to work independently
  • Able to undertake topic, sector and company research on relevant ESG issues
  • An ability to multitask, prioritise a diverse workload, whilst meeting relevant deadlines.
  • An ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at different levels and in different departments
  • A relevant degree (technical
- or finance-based)
