Senior Support Worker / Shift Leader, Children's Residential, Gloucester


To provide a high standard of quality care, for young people aged between 8 and 18, in a structured, stimulating, caring and safe environment, free from any prejudices and which offers young people opportunities to be listened to and express their wishes, needs and feelings.


To empower young people and teach them the necessary life skills, which will enable them to successfully move on to the next stage in their lives.


Our client believes that young people do not thrive in 'institutionalised' environments and great emphasis is placed on making the home as nurturing and customary as every other caring nuclear family home in order for young people to reach their full potential without feeling different or being segregated from their community.


Responsibilities of Senior Support Worker / Shift Leader, Children's Residential, Gloucester

  • Building and maintaining positive trusting relationships with young people.
  • Manage the wellbeing and social behaviours of young people, ensuring that behaviours are addressed promptly and sensitively.
  • Daytoday care of our young people. A large part of this position entails acting as a positive role model for young people by undertaking general household tasks, such as cooking / cleaning and ensuring the home and grounds are kept in good order.
  • Encourage and transport young people to attend education, meetings, health appointments and other events.
  • Organise and accompany young people on activities, holidays, and weekends away.
  • Promoting positive family contact for our young people, supervising contact where necessary and recording appropriately.
  • Contributing to the promotion of building and maintaining good relationships with local residents in the neighbourhood and other community facilities.
  • Support young people by promoting their age appropriate independence.
  • Implementing and following daily routines for the young people, such as bedtimes and promoting the importance of personal hygiene.
  • Good timekeeping.
  • Contributing to team and individual development by attending and fully participating in supervisions.
  • Being a supportive team player by working consistently in a positive way with your colleagues which includes attending the monthly team meetings.
  • Passing on and recording any concerns / complaints to the manager or senior at the earliest opportunity.
  • Taking responsibility for healthy menu planning and shopping duties.
  • Competent computer and recording skills, ensuring records are factual and of good quality.
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with Social Workers, professionals from other agencies, as well as with the parents and families of our young people.
  • Petty cash monitoring duties, ensuring that all monies in or out are correctly recorded.
  • Supporting new or less experienced staff members to develop in their own roles whilst working on shift.
  • Make appropriate safeguarding decisions, upon advice from Manager or senior on call person and make the appropriate recordings.
  • Supporting and holding young people's inhouse meetings, ensuring young people's views and wishes are taken into consideration, discussed during team meetings and that young people are provided with appropriate feedback and that this process is accurately reflected in the appropriate records.
  • Maintaining a safe living and working environment, following the provisions of the Health and Safety regulations, ensuring that the appropriate records are completed for vehicle maintenance, diary, visitors book, home maintenance and all fire and safety procedures.
  • Accept direction on tasks and priorities from your Line Manager or Higher Management.
In addition to mastering the aforementioned duties, which are the responsibilities of Senior Support Workers, the Shift Leader post is also accountable for the following tasks:

LEVEL 1 (SHIFT LEADER)

  • Post holder has obtained their relevant NVQ Level 3 Diploma.
  • Take responsibility for the general running of the home, ensure the home is running smoothly, make competent decisions with advice from Manager where necessary, record appropriately and update the Manager accordingly.
  • Monitoring that all staff are following the H & S provisions and that the necessary records are completed correctly.
  • Undertaking whatever personal care is required for the young people at the appropriate level, including such tasks as dispensing medication and recording the same accurately.
Undertaking the role of Keyworker for a young person which includes:

  • Updating of all risk assessments and plans for your key child
  • Preparing for, attending or facilitating formal monthly keyworking summaries
  • Ensuring that your key child's paperwork is up to date and is being completed fully and accurately.
