Job summary:

This is an exciting time to join the Department for International Trade's new team in Northern Ireland.

We are looking for someone with excellent stakeholder engagement and communications skills, who is passionate about driving forward Northern Ireland Trade and Investment by leading a coherent international growth strategy across Northern Ireland's growing Science and Technology sector.


We aim to support Northern Ireland companies be a world leaders in emerging innovations and trends in new treatments, medical technologies, digital health and AI, battery technology and the transition away from plastics.


In addition to developing trade opportunities the post-holder will work collaboratively with a wide range of businesses and stakeholders in Northern Ireland and beyond, ensuring the Office for Investment and DIT's global network actively look for investors to drive innovation and growth across these sectors in Northern Ireland.

The post-holder will ensure DIT's Science and Technology work is high profile, well received and understood at local, regional and national level in Northern Ireland.


Job description:


  • Working closely with the DIT Science and Technology team to ensure alignment on business support and activities.
  • Relationship management of key Northern Ireland businesses, inward investors, trade associations, regulatory bodies, NHS and academic stakeholders, business representative organisations and agencies. This will include working with the Northern Ireland Executive, Invest Northern Ireland, and other organisations with interests in promoting Northern Ireland's Science and Technology businesses overseas.
  • Ensuring Northern Ireland businesses are taking full advantage of services and support on offer, while helping our department design services appropriate to Northern Ireland business needs, including the, the GREAT campaign, the Made in the UK, Sold to the World campaign and other export promotion initiatives.
  • Gathering of business intelligence and insight to feed into our wider department's work on key government policy areas such as trade disputes, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and market access.
  • Build relationships with the Northern Ireland Executive to understand their approach to Foreign Direct Investment in Northern Ireland, identifying key opportunity gaps, building network capability, and supporting on key projects and investors to ensure the Northern Ireland offer is well known and better sold worldwide.
  • Lead written and oral briefings for Ministers on your sector area.

Hybrid Working


The role will be based in Belfast and may require occasional travel to other DIT offices and travel across Northern Ireland when restrictions ease.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in the office, on average.

Commuting costs to meet this requirement and travelling to the main office location in Belfast will not be covered by DIT, however commuting costs will be covered for travel to a DIT office which is not the employee's main office location under the Department's Travel and Expenses Policy.


Person specification:


Essential Criteria

  • Experience in the Life Sciences sector or related technology.
  • Ability to collaborate with a complex group of internal and external stakeholders and achieve shared objectives.
  • Strong commercial awareness and experience of working in or engaging with the private sector
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in digital health and AI, battery technology and the transition away from plastics.
  • Track record of leading and delivering projects aligned with wider organisational goals.
  • Able to manage conflicting demands and priorities, work at pace, flexibly and under pressure, make effective decisions and ensure deadlines are adhered to.
  • The ability to compile, assimilate, distil, and interpret and present evidence and options, drawing on experts as appropriate.
  • An understanding of the Northern Ireland business environment.
