Purpose of the Job:


The Youth Engagement Officer is an exciting and unique role which combines the responsibility of running the onsite NCW Youth Club and extending that work to other young people who are blind or vision impaired, both in the wider community and nationally.

The Youth Engagement Officer is an exciting and unique role which combines the responsibility of running the onsite NCW Youth Club and extending that work to other young people who are blind or vision impaired, both in the wider community and nationally.


The Youth Club at NCW is a facility for residential students to enjoy outside of the school day in the evenings and weekends.

With a pool table, air hockey and other entertainment equipment, the space is great resource for students who are blind and vision impaired to relax when not in lessons.

The postholder will be responsible for opening, maintaining and operating this space - including running a varied programme of events and activities.


Alongside this, the postholder will use their experience and skills to engage with children and young people in the wider community, attending residential breaks run by charity partners, participating in open days and recruitment events and running online get togethers for young people with a vision impairment.

The focus of this element of the role is to communicate NCW's offer by building relationships with families and other sight loss organisations and charities.

This is a fun, diverse and hands-on role for a motivated self-starter who enjoys spending time with young people and who has a 'can do' attitude.

This post is a regulated activity, and is conditional on two satisfactory and verified references, an enhanced DBS Clearance and Registration, and medical clearance and a six-month probationary period.

Main Tasks:


Youth Club

  • To lead on the provision of the NCW Youth Club, running a varied programme of events and activities for NCW students.
  • Work with students to codesign the programme for the Youth Club.
  • Be responsible for opening, maintaining and operating this space.
  • To devise and implement a programme of Youth Club based activities and events for students of NCW.
  • Organise staffing of the Youth Club and oversee volunteers supporting events and activities.
  • The provision of appropriate reports, risk assessments and the maintenance of records on pupil participation with Youth Club events and activities.
  • To have due regard for Health and Safety and Safeguarding elements of running the Youth Club and act accordingly and appropriately.
  • Willingness to undertake any First Aid, medical or safeguarding training as required.

Nationwide Youth Engagement

  • To attend activity and sports weekends and family events with charity partners, involving working with young people and their families, much of which will be at weekends and over holiday periods. This could involve overnight stays at activity centres.
  • To proactively develop and maintain strong relationships with key individuals in sight loss charities, developing strong relationships to help promote NCW and communicate the NCW offer.
  • To support the Marketing team in participation with student recruitment open days and events to help realise student recruitment targets.
  • Support the development and implementation of a school engagement programme targeted at UK primary schools to involve assemblies, class workshops and activities to raise awareness of vision impairment and NCW.
  • Plan and implement a programme of online youth activities to children and young people with a vision impairment.
  • If required, to represent NCW at exhibitions and events, engaging with parents and young people affected by vision impairment, to promote NCW and communicate the NCW offer.
  • To represent NCW externally in a responsible and professional manner.
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with your level of responsibility as may be required by Line Manager, Senior Leadership Team (SLT) or Principal in order to ensure the efficient functioning of the College.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the nature of the post and under the reasonable direction of the Principal.
