Short summary


Within the Social Survey Division, the Telephone Operations is responsible for collecting data that underpins those statistics by conducting a number of telephone surveys with selected addresses across the UK.

Telephone Operations is a busy, interesting area employing a diverse workforce of around 200 interviewers working varying shift patterns, including evenings and Saturdays.


Job description

The role will require you to:

  • Conduct telephone interviews with members of the public, who have been randomly selected and pre-notified.
  • Encourage people to actively take part in the survey.
  • Ask survey questions and record the answers on a computer.
  • Work on a variety of surveys.
  • Complete a Basic Disclosure criminal record certificate
To achieve maximum response from our surveys, we will require shifts to carried out during the following times:

Monday 09:00 - 16:00,

Thursday 12:00 - 21:00,

Friday 12:00 - 20:00

Saturday morning 09:30 - 13:30.

We can offer a minimum contract of 20 hours per week and a maximum of 27 hours per week.

Telephone Operations business hours are as follows:
Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu: 09:00-21:00

Fri: 09:00-20:00

Sat: 09:30-13:30

Hours will be discussed if you are invited to interview.


Essential skills:


Telephone Interviewers need to have:

  • Previous interviewing or callcentre experience.
  • Excellent IT skills, proficient in Word and Excel and be able to learn new software systems quickly.
  • The ability to follow detailed instruction to record data accurately.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • The confidence and professionalism to converse with a wide range of people with diverse backgrounds.
  • The ability to persuade reluctant people to agree to be interviewed.
