The Privacy, Transparency & Trust (PTT) Sub-directorate is a sub-directorate of the Delivery Directorate.

The mission of the PTT Sub-directorate is to enable NHS England to drive innovation and improve lives through greater use of data and technology and to be a well-run organisation.

The PTT Sub-directorate will enable and promote public trust in NHS England's custodianship of staff, workforce and patient data.

This aligns with the new legal duty of NHS England to have regard to the need to respect and promote privacy of patients and the core principles that underpin NHS England as a safe haven of patient data.


The IG Lead role provides professional expertise, experience and leadership within the IG Delivery teams (Digital & Operations, Data and Analytics) in the PTT Sub-directorate.

The postholder will set the strategic direction and lead on the provision of an efficient, effective, professional, and well-co-ordinated service within the relevant IG Delivery team capable of meeting all statutory, regulatory and NHS requirements in alignment with the activity of the organisation.

The post holder will lead information governance change across the newly merged organisation to ensure NHS England leads as an exemplar organisation for good information governance in the NHS.


The role requires extensive knowledge of guidance published by the Information Commissioner's Office, guidance published by the National Data Guardian, NHS Records Management Code of Conduct, and other relevant NHS and Department of Health and Social Care policies and guidance.


In April 2023, NHS England, NHS Digital, and Health Education England merged to create a new, single organisation to lead the NHS in England.

This new NHS England is designed to create a simpler, smaller, high performing, organisation that leads the NHS more effectively and is a better place to work.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

This role provides professional expertise, experience and leadership to one of the teams within the PTT Sub-directorate.


Comprehensive knowledge and experience of:

Working in an information governance / privacy / data protection role.

Working in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.

Writing key information governance documents, including IG policies and procedures, data protection impact assessments, privacy notices, briefings, advice notes, reports; including director reports and briefings.

Ability to tailor documents to the specific audience.

Providing clear and practical IG advice within tight timeframes in a range of formats tailored to the audience.

Such advice may be required with considerable urgency on highly complex and high-profile matters which necessitates deep concentration for extended periods of time.

Delivery of the advice may be required in person necessitating travel and physical attendance at meeting locations.
Effectively communicating key IG issues and raising awareness across the organisation.

Conducting IG related research to perform role.
Working collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes for the organisation. Engaging and contributing to a team culture of continuous improvement and excellent service delivery. Developing yourself and others to operate a "one team" respectful and inclusive culture.


Contributing to team succession planning and career development through identifying staff training needs and actively training/mentoring staff members to reach their potential, including motivating individuals and team to achieve challenging goals.


Leading on and co-ordinating colleagues in response to highly unpredictable and urgent activities such as personal data breach responses and urgent project/programme issues.

Supervising junior colleagues, including assessing individual performance, capability & skill gaps, recognising and acknowledging exceptional performance and developing and reviewing performance improvement plans where required.

Developing and maintaining effective relationships with a range of internal colleagues to address IG related matters.
