The role and our team
We are looking for a creative social media expert to join our team to develop and deliver innovative communications plans featuring ministers for departmental and ministerial channels.
You will be part of a wider team of digital specialists working on high-profile, life-changing projects.
We work to tell the BEIS story, defend the department's reputation, and explain how our policies improve lives across the UK.
We do this by engaging our target audiences using creative visual content on a range of social media platforms.Your primary focus will be to ensure that we are utilising the profiles of our ministers and their channels to help tell these stories in the most effective way and increase the departments reach online.
You will be embedded in the heart of the UK government, working on a very varied portfolio - from highly targeted campaigns that help the public with crucial information over many months, to fast-moving major headline news stories that change hour by hour.
Whether you are communicating about business growth and new jobs across the country, or the transformation of the UK's energy system to be cleaner and more secure, or world-leading scientific breakthroughs - the portfolio at BEIS is broad and exciting, with no 2 days the same, and hundreds of stories to tell.
Person specification:
Key responsibilities
- Develop innovative and creative social media strategies and content plans involving ministers to communicate the department's priorities to target audiences.
- Draft high quality social media copy, video scripts and content briefs. This will be for planned activity and announcements with varying lead in times, and also jumping on news hooks and social media trends at very short notice.
- Work with ministers, their Special Advisers and Private Offices to plan, develop and publish social media content.
- Work with colleagues across the Communications directorate, including Media and Strategic Communications colleagues to understand the objectives and insight behind our work, and Creative Content Producers and Channel Managers in your team to produce and publish social media content.
- Act as an adviser on digital communications and engagement to ministers and senior stakeholders.
- Keep up with the latest digital trends so that you can recommend innovative approaches and ideas in a swiftly changing social media environment.
- Carry out evaluation of digital communications and feed key insights into planning.
- Flex to manage shortterm asks, and fastturnaround reactive comms where required.
It is a requirement of the role that you can travel round the UK, and sometimes abroad, to film with ministers and case studies, sometimes at short notice.
