You are invited to explore a JCF post in Elderly Medicine working alongside the friendly and supportive Elderly Medicine Team at Royal Preston Hospital.


This post offers excellent experience in elderly medicine and general (internal) medicine, and is suitable for those wishing to train in any medical specialty or general practice.

It will be ideal for those wishing to explore a future career in geriatric medicine.


The post offers opportunity to gain experience in undertaking comprehensive geriatric assessment, developing higher communication skills (particularly regarding advance care planning) and using the concepts and principles of frailty to improve patient experience of care.

There will be opportunity to undertake procedures (with appropriate supervision).


Our department is part of the Medical Directorate at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, providing services at Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley & South Ribble Hospital, and serving a local population of 390,000 people.

This post is based on Ward 17, a 32-bedded ward on the Royal Preston Hospital site.


The department also operates a 10-bedded Acute Frailty Assessment Unit, provides proactive surgical inreach (POPS) to general surgery, vascular and major trauma patients, offers general geriatrics and specialist falls clinics, and works with community partners to provide specialist input to patients in the local community.


We have a weekly departmental teaching programme at which you will have opportunity to give presentations and received written feedback.

You will also have exposure to clinical governance issues and be encouraged to participate in a quality improvement project using principles of continuous improvement to improve patient care.
