An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Tobacco Treatment Advisor as part of the Healthy Hospital Team within the Trust.

The Tobacco Treatment Advisors provide 1:1 support for patients and staff who want to attempt to quit smoking.

The post will be primarily based at the Northern General but there is a requirement to work cross all hospital sites.

The Healthy Hospital Team is an innovative development within the Trust.

The team is part of the QUIT programme along with other acute and mental health trusts across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

The QUIT Programme is an initiative which transforming the way tobacco addiction is treated in our hospitals, offering all patients who smoke access to effective treatment and support.

The QUIT programme is being delivered in alliance with Yorkshire Cancer Research.

You will be part of an established team and will receive full training, supervision and support. No prior experience of working in smoking cessation or with people with addictions is necessary.

We are looking for enthusiastic, effective communicators who value diversity and are good at working with people.


You will have the opportunity to make a real difference to patients and staff by supporting people to stop smoking.

You will work with colleagues from the Community Stop Smoking Services to ensure that patients are followed up after they leave hospital.

It is essential for this role that you will be fully supportive of the Trust's smoke free policy, acting as a smoke free champion as part of your work.


Specifically the post holder will:


  • Work with patients and staff on a 1:1 basis to provide the correct treatment for tobacco dependency.
  • Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service through offering healthy lifestyle advice and support.
  • Work with patients and staff, using behavioural change principles to improve their health.
  • Act as a smoke free champion promoting the smoke free message through their day to day work.
  • Provide advice and support to ward staff, including reinforcing the training provided to the inpatient teams about the QUIT Programme and treating tobacco dependency.
  • Ensure seamless transition to Community Stop Smoking Services for patients wishing to quit smoking after discharge.
  • Signpost and refer to other community harmreduction services such as alcohol care teams or weight management programmes.
