Job Summary

  • To assist in the delivery of psychologically minded work within Providence and Moira Units at Aaban. The post holder will work under the supervision of the Clinical Psychologists within the team, working in the care of children and young people.
  • To support and enhance the psychological care of children and young people residing at the placement, providing psychological assessments and interventions under clinical supervision.
  • To work independently to agreed operational objectives that are set and assessed at agreed intervals by the clinical supervisor and professional leads within the service.
  • To assist in clinically related administration, conduct of audits and research projects, collection of statistics, development of outcomes measures, teaching and project work as required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

We are a 10 bedded therapeutic placement, with two units next door to each other. We work primarily with young people who have complex trauma, and/or additional social, emotional and mental health needs. Our referrals come from various sources, predominantly Children's Social Care and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Members of the clinical team may at times be exposed to distressing situations or challenging behaviour.


MAIN DUTIES

Clinical

Under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist:

  • To assist in the psychological assessment of children and young people using a range of assessment methodologies, including psychometric and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, direct and indirect observations, semi-structured interviews, screening tools and routine outcome measures.
  • To undertake assessments of psychological and mental health problems, that will inform interventions from the team or assist in the signposting of clients to appropriate services.
  • To participate in functional assessment of challenging behaviour, and assist in the development and implementation of positive behaviour support plans for children and young people with complex and challenging mental health and social care needs.
  • To contribute to the multidisciplinary and psychological formulation of clients presenting problems and to assist in the formulation and delivery of psychoeducational and psychological interventions, as appropriate to the level of knowledge, experience and training. This might include the delivery of individual psychological therapy and the cofacilitation of group and family interventions.
  • To write clinical reports tailored to a range of audiences, including writing case summaries for young people and their carers.
  • To assist the Clinical Psychologists in the delivery of psychological interventions at a systemic level, including staff reflective practice, case discussion and training.
  • To work collaboratively with a range of staff from the multidisciplinary team, other service providers and referrers, to assess needs and formulate action plans.
  • To attend and contribute to multidisciplinary meetings, as appropriate to the level of training and experience, including liaison with other service providers as required.

Teaching, Training and Supervision

  • In common with all Assistant Clinical Psychologists, to receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with professional practice guidelines.
  • To develop skills and competencies that assist in the delivery of current duties.
  • To contribute to training and supporting the multidisciplinary team in developing a greater understanding and increased skills in psychologically informed assessments and interventions.

Research and Service Evaluation

  • To assist in the design and implementation of audit and research projects.
  • To undertake data collection, data analysis and the production of reports and summaries using IT and statistical programmes.

General Duties of all Post Holders

  • To undertake any other reasonable duty, which is appropriate to the band, when requested by Senior Staff.
  • To be familiar with and comply with all Aaban policies, procedures and protocols and guidelines.
  • To be aware of and work towards Aaban's strategic goals.

IT responsibilities (other than those used for research)
