As a District Warden, you will play a pivotal role in enforcing legislation related to animal welfare and public health within the Newry, Mourne, and Down District Council area.

You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant laws, investigating complaints, and educating the community on responsible pet ownership.

This role requires a proactive and diligent individual with a passion for promoting animal welfare and enhancing public safety.


Your Duties:


  • Implement and enforce legislation pertinent to the role, including the Dogs (NI) Order 1983, the Dangerous Dogs Order, and relevant Council Bylaws.
  • Develop and deliver educational programs and materials on various aspects of the role, targeting schools, community groups, and individual ratepayers.
  • Maintain records, compile reports, and monitor conditions in kennels, providing recommendations to management as necessary.
  • Investigate and resolve complaints and inquiries from the public and other agencies.
  • Patrol the district, including beaches, to deter and detect breaches of legislation.
  • Inspect breeding establishments and kennels, facilitating registration and ensuring compliance.
  • Supervise markets, including pitch allocation and fee collection.
  • Handle stray and injured dogs, coordinating veterinary care as needed.
  • Collaborate with community groups and relevant agencies to address issues effectively.
  • Assist in organising and delivering enforcementrelated activities for Council employees.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including issuing notices and preparing evidence for legal proceedings.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment according to safety standards.

Your Profile:


  • Minimum of 6 months of experience in a related environment, or 1 year of relevant experience in lieu of qualifications.

Experience:


  • Experience in investigations and report preparation.
  • Experience in effectively communicating with customers.
  • Experience in conducting investigations and exercising statutory powers.

Technical Skills and Knowledge:


  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Other Requirements:


  • Full valid driving license and access to transport.
  • Willingness to work outside normal office hours.
