Job summary


The main purpose of the role is to assume responsibility for financial management in liaison with the Practice Manager, to include invoice processing, reconciliation, credit control, creation, and analysis of both financial and statistical reports.

Primary responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Finance Assistant.

There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will depend on factors such as workload and staffing levels.


  • Review all income and expenditure statements, identifying any inaccuracies and rectifying such issues, informing the Practice Manager as required.
  • Maintain an effective system for the handling of petty cash and cheques
  • Ensure invoices are paid within the given time frame
  • Responsible for payroll administration, including pensions.
  • Ensure the presentation of monthly financial reports is of a high standard, reconciling all bank accounts within the accounting software, chasing outstanding and unknown payments/receipts.
  • Submit financial claims within required timeframes.
  • Check PCSE statements against previously submitted claims.
  • Ensure that effective financial controls are in place and processes are adhered to
  • Understand and brief the management team on financial implications of contract and legislation changes affecting the practice.
Secondary responsibilities

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Finance Assistant may be requested to:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for finance-related matters with NHS(E), the ICB and the practice accountant
  • Partake in audit as requested by the audit lead
  • Attend and actively participate in practice meetings, when required.
  • Attend any external meetings pertinent to the role of Finance Assistant


This document may be amended, following consultation with the postholder, to facilitate the development of the role, the practice and the individual.

All personnel should be prepared to accept additional, or surrender existing, duties to enable the efficient running of the practice.

£12.50 per hour
