Strategic Independent Advisory Group (SIAG) is a group of independent volunteers who offer constructive appraisal to the Police on its strategies, policies and services.
Acting as a critical friend, SIAG is a vital strand of community consultation and engagement.

An exciting opportunity now exists for you to be part of this valued group. We are looking for people from a broad range of communities with different skills, experience, knowledge and perspectives.
We particularly want to attract people who reflect the interests of Ethnic communities, LGBTQ+ community, people with physical disabilities & Neurodiversity, travellers and gypsies, faith communities and migrant workers.
The role of members as a SIAG member your community views will help Northumbria Police continue to build stronger relationships with diverse communities whilst also improving the services we deliver.
The role includes:
- Considering proposals and offer timely suggestions about how to do things better based on your own personal experiences as well as those of your community.
- Considering relevant management information and offer an interpretation of underlying community issues.
- Identifying opportunities to network and build partnerships with other organisations and communities.
- Acting as a community advocate for the police and the Police and Crime Commissioner and feedback any community issues.
You need to be able to:
- Critically appraise organisational policies, practices and procedures.
- Provide constructive feedback on sensitive issues and offer recommendations on possible improvements
What do I need to know?
- Members of the SIAG are a group of unpaid volunteers and will include independent individuals from diverse communities with a broad practical experience working with and for communities
- SIAG meets six times a year and members are expected to attend a minimum of four of these meetings
- All members will be vetted to protect the integrity of Northumbria Police and the SIAG
- Membership will be reviewed annually by SIAG members and consideration given as to whether further recruitment of members is required.
- The SIAG membership will include a Chair and a Deputy Chair. An election will take place every 3 years for the Chair and Deputy Chair where all independent members are allowed to vote. The process for election will be agreed by members.
Please note Vetting is part of the process and you must have been a UK resident for 3 years.
