At Action on Disability we support individuals to employ their own personal assistants (we are not a recruitment agency; we are a support service).
This means that, you will not be employed by Action on Disability, but directly by the individual themselves or by a representative who is acting on their behalf.
Personal Assistant (PA) for a Young Adult with Autism
Job descriptions:
- Prompt client to maintain personal hygiene (client is able to access and use the toilet)
- Prompt client to ensure that he is appropriately clothed for the weather or occasion
- Assist the housekeeper to clean up after client's each meal (client is able to eat and drink independently), housework or other chores related to client.
- Escort and accompany client to access local community facilities, services, appointments
- Help client with arts or crafts or playing games.
Person specifications:
- Be patient and persistent
- Be caring and proactive in helping others
- Be sportive, as client is an active young man, and the PA may need to support client to participate in community activities of sporting nature;
- Have some experience of working with people with autism.
- Have great attention to detail, specially regarding safety and client's diet.
- Have good interpersonal skills. Client can sometimes be difficult, confused, depressed or fragile. PA must be sensitive, compassionate, patient, and empathetic.
- Have good physical condition. PA can be required to join client to participate in 510K marathon or other sports activities.
- Have good time management skills. Ensuring client make it to appointments, and take his daily supplement, as well as making sure meals are administered on a regular basis.
