Acute Medicine are looking to recruit a new team member to join us in our exciting and developing Physician Associate workforce.

The PA is a member of the multi-disciplinary team, aiding in the delivery of a high quality, patient centred service.

You will participate in all aspects of the patient pathway and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge.

As a PA, you will assess and examine patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations and recommend treatment.

The PA role in Acute Medicine is challenging yet rewarding and we'll support you to grow and feel confident to carry out the role in our busy Acute Medicine areas - Ward B3 Admissions Unit - Level 1 Higher Acuity Area - AMRA GP assessment and SDEC area

Contribute to patient care, exercising a high level of professional judgment and expertise when delivering care


This will include:

  • Taking medical histories
  • Undertaking physical examinations
  • Ordering appropriate investigations
  • Interpreting investigation findings
  • Making a differential diagnosis
  • Making recommendations as to appropriate treatment
  • Fully documenting all aspects of patient care and completing all associated paperwork according to Trust and local policies and procedures.

The Acute Medicine department at NUH is one of the busiest in the country.

Initially, you will join our middle grade rota, forming part of a highly motivated and ambitious multi-disciplinary team which includes medics, nursing staff, ACPs, Physician Associates and prescribing pharmacists.

  • Develop and maintain specialist medical knowledge
  • Keep up to date with current guidelines and maintain best practice
  • Support the development of the NUH Physician Associate Programme, including PA student placements
  • Be accountable for care given and comply with the Fitness to Practice and Code of Conduct standard as established by the UK Managed Voluntary register for Physician Associates.
  • Maintain membership in good standing of the PA managed voluntary register (or such other register as may replace it)
  • Work at all times within the framework of the scope of professional practice
  • Maintain knowledge and skills in medical practices through appropriate continuing professional development
  • Take an active role in departmental audit and governance activity
  • Where appropriate, teach and train junior doctors and medical students rotating into the specialty
  • Attend appropriate teaching sessions in order to improve knowledge and practice.
  • Works in partnership with the existing senior medical, nursing and AHP teams in driving departmental development and change.
