Clinical Neuroscience, which is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield is the service provider to South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Lincolnshire and North Nottinghamshire, serving a population in excess of 2.2 million.

The Neurosciences Directorate includes Neurosurgery, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology.

Neurosciences is an Academic Directorate, it was the first to be established in the Trust and has a strong focus on research.

There are seven research themes which are neurodegeneration, cerebrovascular (including stroke), neuro-inflammation, epilepsy, neurosurgery and neurophysiology with a cross-cutting theme of industry/commercial research.


Research activity in these areas is encouraged and supported under the guidance of research theme leads and the directorates Academic Director.

In 2016 Neurosciences was designated Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) status from the NIHR, this centre hosted by STH brings together outstanding scientists from the University of Sheffield Departments of Neuroscience and Engineering in multidisciplinary research institutes SITraN and INSIGNEO together with clinical disciplines at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to improve the treatment and care of people living with chronic neurological disorders.
