HEALTH AND SAFETY / RISK MANAGEMENT All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users.

This includes complying at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed security and safer working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system.

TRAINING AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional Development remains a priority.

The jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.


COMMUNICATION & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS To communicate with patients many of who are extremely ill, either in person or on the telephone, often with barriers to communication, in a friendly and helpful manner.

They communicate with a wide range of individuals including colleagues within Pathology, medical and nursing staff on wards and directly with patients, who are often old and who can have difficulty in understanding some of the complicated information being given.

To promote good communication systems within the department ensuring that all staff have adequate information to do their jobs effectively, including written operational procedures.

To ensure that staff communicate effectively with other teams both internally and externally.

To ensure patient information is appropriately stored and achieved


PHYSICAL EFFORT:
This job requires a high degree of dexterity and precision when handling blood collection materials. Accuracy and speed are a prerequisite.

Blood collection procedures are repetitive and may involve the job holder standing, bending at the work station or pushing a trolley for extended periods.


This post requires the holder to manage stock control, including movement of goods from the point of delivery to the point of storage.

This will require frequent movement of light and moderate loads up to 15kg.


MENTAL EFFORT:
The collection of blood involves long periods of intense concentration.

Staff have to spend a large part of their day bending over to ensure the needle enters the vein cleanly.

This requires considerable manual dexterity.

While working within the blood collection room and onwards, they can experience a string of interruptions from telephone calls, and ward staff and patients asking questions or for advice.

The post holder may be required to drive to community and domiciliary locations and to peripheral hospital sites.

There is normally no requirement to lift people, but there is a frequent requirement to assist people reach a suitable position for the procedure and manage adverse incidents such as fainting.


EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

The post holder will be expected to deal with difficult situations including the following: Handling complaints from patients and carers, some of whom may be aggressive and threatening Undertaking preliminary investigations e.g.

into alleged misconduct on the part of staff members Undertaking staff appraisals and dealing with capability issues Working with patients, including children, whose condition is distressing Dealing with complaints from wards and departments e.g.

regarding service availability.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
The post holder will occasionally encounter aggressive behaviour from patients and carers, e.g.

when dealing with complaints.

They come into contact with various issues of patient cleanliness, dealing with clothing soiled with bodily fluids and other distasteful things.
