You will be working on rivers and tidal defences to prevent and respond to flooding and pollution.You will be maintaining rivers and repairing our defences to provide a high standard of flood protection to our communities.
You will be expected to work efficiently, safely and to a high standard often working within Construction, Design and Management (CDM) regulations.
This hands-on role involves:
- Working together as a team and being outside in all weathers
- Using a variety of tools and equipment and operation of plant and equipment to complete tasks
- Responding to flood and environmental incidents inside and outside of normal working hours by participating, training and exercising, deploying sandbags, temporary barriers, mobile pumps and pollution equipment
- Producing dynamic risk management and unplanned risk management documentation
- Undertaking regular checks and inspections of equipment, including tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), vehicles and plant
- Communicating with customers, landowners, partners, members of the public and colleagues
You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.
This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team
- You will be working as part of a diverse team of 17. We undertake a maintenance programme on rivers and watercourses in the Rother catchment responding to environmental incidents, such as flooding and pollution, both day and night. We also work across the country when other areas need assistance responding to environmental incidents.
- Experience/skills required
- You should have the necessary practical ability and an understanding in environmental awareness as well as a handson approach
- An understanding of site health and safety requirements would be an advantage
- Able to carry out tasks and answer queries effectively
- Competent using IT devices, such as an iPad, and willing to learn our inhouse systems
- Undertake specialist training as and when required
- Literacy and numeracy skills are required
- Some experience in asset operation or maintenance/incident response/use of equipment/tools is an advantage, however full training will be provided. More important is having a positive "can do" attitude.
