The Housing Options and Support Team at York City Council are looking to appoint 2 x full time Housing Options Workers.


These are permanent posts to work as part of the Housing Options Team to deliver support and legal duties under the Housing Act 96 & the Homeless Reduction Act 2017, including general advice, prevention, relief and main duty decisions, to those who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

The role

You will be dealing with prevention and relief case work in office, home, and community settings.


The role will focus on preventing and relieving homelessness and proactively exploring housing solutions for people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness in line with legislation, policy and process.


You will manage an active caseload and be responsible for legal duties and decisions in accordance with legislation (Housing Act 1996 and Homeless Reduction Act 2017).


Key skills and experience required:

  • Knowledge of housing legislation, especially homeless legislation, landlord and tenant law and welfare benefits and debt work.
  • Relevant advice work in statutory / voluntary sector.
  • High standards of written and oral communication.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to adapt in changing situations.
  • Ability to interpret and explain complex legislation.
  • Computer literate including knowledge / experience of specialist systems.


The duties of this post require the postholder to undertake a basic Criminal Record check (unspent convictions only) via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role.

Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.
