Description

Why should I choose Somerset County Council?
We're a hugely ambitious council, committed to improving lives for the residents, communities and businesses of Somerset.

That is why we are working hard to build a sustainable organisation with a culture that rewards, values and recognises our staff, and gives everyone here the opportunity to grow and develop, personally and professionally.

If you're looking for a place where your work truly matters; and where you truly matter - we might be just right for you.

We promote a healthy work-life balance and offer flexible working arrangements wherever possible, including working from home for the majority of the week.

What will I be doing?

You'll be working as part of a small, supportive team where you'll form a key part of the school admissions appeals process.

On paper, this looks like any other administrative role - but the reality is that the day-to-day work we do is varied, interesting and enjoyable (even if we do say so ourselves).

We spend our days working to improve the lives of Children in Somerset - and you'll be a key part of that.

You'll help us with the processing and formulating of appeal statements, whilst also collaborating with colleagues and schools to present the most complete picture possible.

This will include:

  • Researching, processing and writing school admission appeals
  • Liaising with colleagues and providing advice to parents and schools

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

It doesn't matter whether you've had experience in an administrative role before (we've always been happy to welcome people from different professions, including, for example, retail).

We're a close, supportive team - and we'll give you all the training and guidance you need to be the best you can be in this role.

Then - if you feel that the role is right for you - tell us a bit more about your relevant skills and experience.

You could do this by tailoring your CV (or including a supporting statement) when you apply.

Before you dive in though, here's a snapshot of a few things we're looking for:

  • Basic ICT and data entry skills (think Microsoft Office, Excel etc).
  • The ability to manage time effectively and work to deadlines.
  • A natural and engaging communication style both verbal and written. After all, we want to make sure the strongest possible cases of appeal are being presented.
We are proud to be here for the people of Somerset.

An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

What will I be offered in return?

We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do to improve the lives of people in Somerset.

We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management.

As well as this, we have some fantastic employee benefits available:

  • We promote a healthy worklife balance and offer flexible working arrangements wherever possible, including working from home.
  • Generous annual leave allowance, with the opportunity to purchase additional leave
  • Staff discounts in gyms.
  • Employee Assistance for the times you may need some support and a variety of employee wellbeing services.
  • Auto enrolment onto our generous Pension Scheme and optional pension enhancement through our Additional Voluntary Contribution scheme.
  • A Flexible Benefits Scheme via salary sacrifice to obtain a cycle for work and health screenings.
  • My Staff Shop offering discounts in shops, online shopping, restaurants, cinema tickets, insurance benefits and more

Anything else I should know?
The salary for the role is Grade 14, ranging from £21,189 to £21,968 per annum

From 1 April 2023 the County and District councils in Somerset will be replaced by a new single unitary authority - Somerset Council.

It's a genuinely exciting time to join us as we work together with the four district councils to deliver the new council for Somerset.
