About the Role
The BMC Series comprises more than 50 journals with an ethos of supporting our communities and open science.

The Executive Editor role is an exciting and demanding opportunity for a highly motivated and solutions orientated individual with a passion for open access publishing.

Reporting to the BMC Editorial Director you will have overall responsibility for the entire spectrum of editorial activities, including data advocacy, within the scope of the BMC Series.

This role is located in our London or New York City offices on a hybrid working model.


Role Responsibilities:


  • Lead, motivate and inspire a team of managers to ensure that their editorial teams produce journals that deliver a bestinclass author experience.
  • Manage and grow a key publishing programme in line with the overall open access journal strategy
  • Contribute to the journal strategy in collaboration with the BMC Editorial Director.
  • Ensure that all KPIs are regularly monitored, reported and met.
  • Strive for maximal efficiency and productivity of our teams, revisiting workflows when necessary.
  • Establish a team culture where peerreviewers and EBMs are supported and motivated.
  • Review new journal and commercial opportunities in consultation with the BMC Editorial Director; contribute to journal proposals as appropriate.
  • Contribute to editorial policies and publishing guidelines.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:


  • Excellent English language skills
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field
  • Demonstrable experience of leading a team within an academic publishing environment
  • Solutions orientated with sound analytical skills
  • Proactive attitude
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Financial understanding with the ability to develop and progress business proposals
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage and motivate others
