Main Duties and Responsibilities This is an outline job description designed to give an overview of the responsibilities of the current post.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible to respond to change and organisational need.

The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the wider corporate and organisational needs of the Trust, in consultation with the post holder, as appropriate.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES To assist in the development and implementation of local and national policies, and reviews and audit their effectiveness within the Theatre environment as required.

Participate in the recruitment of junior grades of staff and contribute to their professional development.

Establish appropriate systems within the department for the monitoring of quality standards, facilitate audit of services, risk management, complaints and act upon them accordingly.

Maintain the Clinical Standards as laid out by the NMC/HPC within the clinical environment. Promote and initiate innovations and change related to improvement of clinical services.


Co-ordinate the day to day activities of the theatre anaesthetic staff when necessary and support and teach junior staff in their respective areas.

Be flexible in supporting the on-call service in cases of sickness or other absence. Ensure maintenance of records of sickness and annual leave etc. and implement Trust policies and procedures where appropriate relating to this.

To facilitate ongoing training, staff rosters annual leave and study leave. To co-ordinate operational procedures within theatres where appropriate. To monitor stock levels of pharmacy items and disposables and maintain agreed levels.

To ensure that anaesthetic rooms are fully equipped in terms of drugs and disposables and that these are within date.

Ensure that the custody and registration of controlled drugs is carried out in accordance with the Trust medicines policy. Report any discrepancy in controlled drug handling immediately and instigate any necessary investigation. To take responsibility for the servicing and safe use of equipment in the clinical area.

Assist with the maintenance and utilisation equipment in accordance with the manufacturers instructions and local policy, report any defects to the ODP in charge.


Assist in establishing appropriate systems within the department for the monitoring of qualities standards facilitate audit of services, risk assessment, complaints and act upon them accordingly Report any potential complaints or untoward incidents to the Theatre Coordinator and participate in the Trusts Risk Management process as appropriate.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES Act as a professional member of the operating theatre team in accordance with NMC/HCPC code of conduct. Ensure that all patient documentation is accurate and comprehensive. Carry out a high standard of individualised patient care within the suite at all times.

Ensure patient confidentiality at all times. Ensure that the Anaesthetic room is set up for use and assist in the organisation of the theatre.

You are expected to be available in theatre to assist other staff in looking after and providing appropriate help and support to the patients when the need arises.

Ensure that the relevant anaesthetic documentation is completed in a timely manner these include the anaesthetic machine checklists, daily temperature monitoring audit and anaesthetic times on the ICS system.


To liaise with all members of the theatre team and ensure changes are communicated quickly and accurately to all team members.

EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES To ensure competent well trained staff by identifying skill needs and encouraging personal development activities either individually or as a group.

Facilitate formal training sessions. Schedule educational days and ensure all members of the team have attended mandatory training.


Keep up to date with advances within own profession and in techniques and equipment utilised within the operating theatre which are related to anaesthetics, surgery, post op recovery and resuscitation.

Participate in the Individual Performance Review and RNOH appraisal policy.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Participate in professional appraisal To manage disciplinary situations and maintain confidentiality at all times relating to disputes or disagreements.

To work closely with other hospital departments and wards to facilitate maximum use of operating sessions and ensure optimum flow of patients between wards and theatre.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Participate in equipment procurement programmes. Ensuring that all relevant mechanical and electrical equipment used within the department is documented in an obsolescence replacement roster. Equipment lifespan assessments will be carried out and replacement dates and costing included in rosters.
