The department are seeking a Chemical Laboratory Safety Officer to manage the daily running, safety and security of the Department's general-purpose geochemistry laboratories and analytical facilities, requiring both chemical and health & safety knowledge and expertise.


They will have a knowledge of chemical techniques and procedures, providing advice, guidance and training to department laboratory users (academics, postdoctoral researchers and students) while completing, overseeing, and/or arranging maintenance of laboratory equipment.


The postholder will advise the department on all health & safety matters and will be the 'go to' person for the department on all health and safety related topics, liaising with the University Safety Office as appropriate.

The postholder will have knowledge of the safe storage of all chemicals and gases and will provide advice, guidance and training to laboratory users.

The postholder will lead the correct disposal of hazardous chemical waste in liaison with the Safety Office.

They will ensure that the department is compliant on all health and safety areas and that we adhere to all reporting and audit requirements.

They will also be the Deputy Fire Marshall and a trained First Aider.


The postholder must also have the ability to work independently, and as part of a wider support team, be able to work efficiently and prioritise their own workload and to have excellent time management and organisational skills.

This role is permanent upon successful completion of a one-year probationary period.
