Background

CHASM is an interdisciplinary research centre which undertakes cutting edge research into the local and global challenge of financial risk and insecurity facing a growing number of households.

Our work focuses on understanding the challenges households face, and producing research evidence of the highest quality to improve financial wellbeing.

This is an exciting time to join the CHASM team, as we tackle these pressing problems against a backdrop of a cost-of-living crisis and high income and wealth inequality.

Our research agenda is diverse and falls under three main themes:
Wealth, Assets and Inequality; Poverty, Precarity, Saving and Debt, and Risk and Financial Wellbeing in Later Life.

The CHASM core team is made up of over ten members of professional services and academic staff with varied disciplinary backgrounds from across the School of Social Policy and the Birmingham Business School, as well as honorary research fellows and internal and external associate members.

Role Summary

Planning for later life now requires the careful negotiation of a range of risks and uncertainties, from personal life events over which people have limited control, to the market risks associated with financial transactions, especially in respect of complex financial products.

Applicants will be expected to outline at least one research project they would design and deliver during the three-year post.

If shortlisted, they will be expected to come prepared to discuss their project ideas in more detail at interview.

Since later life financial wellbeing is so often dependent on financial circumstances and decisions made earlier in life, we welcome ideas based on long-term savings, barriers to planning ahead, and other long-term inequalities that may influence or shape financial security and wellbeing in later life.

Equally, we welcome those focusing on different aspects of financial security and wellbeing in later life.

The post-holder will be expected to work individually and with members of the CHASM team on a range of relevant research activities including data collection and analysis, writing academic papers and policy briefings, organisation and delivery of workshops, seminars and larger events such as the annual CHASM conference, as well as other research-related activity when needed.

The post-holder will be based in the School of Social Policy/Department for Social Policy, Sociology and Criminology.
