Join us as Head of External Affairs for Wealth Businesses

  • For someone with strong media experience and an interest in public affairs, this is an excellent opportunity to help design and implement our external communications strategy for NatWest's Wealth Businesses
  • You'll create, plan and deliver proactive multiplatform external affairs campaigns, designed to support the priorities of our bank
  • Working closely with our public policy and strategy teams to establish a public affairs agenda for this part of the bank, you can expect great visibility for you and your work
  • This role is available for a period of 12 months

What you'll do:


As the Head of External Affairs for the Wealth businesses, you'll manage the media desk and team for our brands, including Coutts, NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland creating consumer PR campaigns and ensuring reactive issues are effectively managed.

You'll be working with the internal communication and marketing teams as you plan, organise and deliver proactive, creative and innovative media campaigns to support our commercial and purpose objectives.


As part of the role, you'll establish strong networks within the Communications & Marketing function and Wealth businesses and form a high level of engagement with key external stakeholders, particularly key media contacts.


Day to day, you'll:

  • Lead the media desk on daily issues, including handling the bank's responses to ongoing reputational challenges
  • Provide excellent media advice and creative ideas which support key stakeholders within the bank, including senior executives
  • Design and manage the external engagement strategy for the CEO of our Wealth Businesses and senior leaders, including media and political engagement and speaking opportunities
  • Manage multiple highprofile news stories, prepare press releases and media materials which align to the bank's narrative and core messaging and strategy, and track and measure successes
  • Actively manage media issues to minimise negative media coverage and make sure that there are no media surprises for the leadership of the bank
  • Make sure that proactive media plans are in place to help generate positive media coverage for the bank across a range of outlets, including national television, radio and social media, and our own digital channel

The skills you'll need:

To join us in this role, you'll need strong leadership experience and people management skills. You'll also have an excellent background of creating and delivering creative and innovative campaigns.

Building relationships with colleagues at senior levels will also be a key part of your role, so you'll need to have strong communication and influencing skills.


You'll be enthusiastic and proactive with a positive approach towards work, and have the ability to work using your own initiative and as part of a wider team.


Along with this, you'll need:

  • Experience of dealing with media strategy and reputation management for a wide range of complex issues
  • Excellent contacts with banking and business journalists from a range of media outlets
  • A strong grasp of political and economic issues and an interest in public affairs
  • An understanding of business strategy, planning and management
  • The ability to coordinate several projects with conflicting deadlines while maintaining high standards of delivery
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise under pressure
