Description

Lynch Syndrome is an inherited genetic condition and represents the most common inherited cancer predisposition syndrome accounting for 5% of all colorectal (CRC) and 3% of all endometrial (EC) cancers.

It affects as many as 1 in 270 people in the UK, but only 5% those affected have a diagnosis.

Cancer Alliance Planning Guidance for 2023/24 is to ensure Lynch Syndrome testing is in place for all newly diagnosed colorectal and endometrial cancers and to ensure that all patients who are identified as likely to have Lynch Syndrome are referred for specialised genetic testing in line with NICE guidelines DG27 and DG42.

This post will not lead to laboratory based experience of testing.

Secondment may be considered for internal applicants.

The Molecular Pathology department is part of the West Kent and Medway Cellular Pathology Service and performs MMR testing on Histology specimens.

The results of this inform clinical colleagues of patients who potentially have Lynch Syndrome and require further genetic referral.

The post holder will ensure that the eligible patients' samples will progress through the Pathway. It is not a technical scientific post.
