The main role of the clinical trials assistant is to support the CCTU team in the administration and running of the in-house, national and international phase I, II and III clinical trials.
Responsibilities include contacting patients by phone, assisting the clinical trial practitioners and research nurses with the booking of patient appointments.
Other tasks include creation and maintenance of files for clinical trials, handling of correspondence, and processing or handling of blood and tumour tissue samples.
Ideally we want someone with an interest in clinical research and cancer, good verbal and written communication skills, and knowledge of Microsoft products such as Excel.
The post holder is responsible for:
Sending, collecting and storing questionnaires
Handling incoming mail and correspondence
Providing a high quality personal assistant service to the team when needed
Attending clinics if/when requested by the Nurse/Coordinator
Retrieval/creation and maintenance of patient notes
Site File maintenance
Requesting and sending biological samples
Supporting data managers with relevant queries
Maintaining up to date and accurate filing systems - paper and IT
Assisting with surveys/audits as required
Having a high degree of interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with a wide range of personnel in the multidisciplinary team orally, in writing or electronically in a professional and courteous manner
To be familiar with and confident in using the Trust IT systems
Taking minutes at departmental and tumour group meetings
Completing mandatory training and other recommended training
Prioritising workload, meeting deadlines and tackling problems systematically and with initiative
Maintaining confidentiality of patient related information at all times
Taking personal responsibility for ensuring that UCLH resources are used efficiently and with minimum wastage
Adhering to all Trust policies and procedures, the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Data Protection Act.
Monitoring and maintaining physical resources within the work area, and reporting any related problems to line management.

The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit office is based in 250 Euston Rd and comprises of three main areas: Haematology, Oncology and Complex Pathways and it supports activity in the local Clinical Research Facility and the North Thames Local Comprehensive Research Network and Experimental Cancer Centre.
Each group is comprised of teams of research nurses, clinical trial practitioners and data managers and provides support to local Investigators wishing to conduct clinical trials and other high quality clinical research projects within UCLH.
Each team supports a portfolio of research and ensures that trials are conducted to the highest standards and in accordance with UK legislation and the R&D Governance Framework.
The aim of the Unit is to effectively use resources to ensure that patients have access to entry into clinical trials, as appropriate, and maintain the highest quality of care for patients.
