KTP is one of the UK government's longest running and most successful knowledge transfer programmes, KTPs help academics and UK organisations work together on strategic partnerships.

Cardiff University's ambition is to develop a resilient and sustainable capability to grow its Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) portfolio.

This will be achieved by improving collaboration between the University and KTP eligible organisations, building the capability of staff, embedding this knowledge and delivering high level value for partnerships.


  • Cardiff University has a strong track record in delivering KTP projects, and growth in this area is strategically significant to both the research and innovation agenda and the University's aims to increase engagement with external organisations. This is a key aim of the University's Research Wales Innovation Fund Strategy.
  • This is a new post within the Business Engagement and Partnerships team, which sits within the Research and Innovation Services Department at Cardiff University. The team delivers activities and support for innovation and business engagement as well as providing support and guidance to academic staff working with external organisations.
  • The post holder will promote the ethos of business engagement in activities using collaboration and new ways of thinking.
    Salary: £28,762 £33,314 per annum (Grade 5)

Key Duties

  • Provide KTP support to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood and clearly shared.
  • Contribute to the growth of KTP numbers at Cardiff University by developing and progressing KTP opportunities
- this may include raising awareness through presentations to small groups; giving advice to academic staff; supporting the bid development process and project set up.

  • Collaborate with others to make recommendations for developments of established processes and procedures.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support KTP activity.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links, especially within the University's Innovation Institutes to exploit KTP opportunity.
  • Work with academic and professional service colleagues to map existing collaborative activity, identify and scope new opportunities for partnership working, providing professional advice and guidance, and developing strategies for the development and of these opportunities.
  • Deploy customer relationship management principles and practices, including the use of CRM tools to support relationships in an integrated way across the institution, and proactively change the delivery according to customer requirements.

Specific Duties:


  • Develop and deliver KTP activity, both digitally and in person, with an emphasis on identifying academic centres best geared to develop KTP activity.
  • Ensure the delivery of the KTP objectives alongside the KTP Manager including the KPIs relating to growing KTP numbers.

General Duties

  • Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties
  • Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity
  • Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role
  • Willingness to undertake further training and development.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria

  • Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership or experience
  • Able to demonstrate professional knowledge of supporting concurrent project activity
and supporting a customer base

  • Ability to set up standard office systems and procedures and make improvements as appropriate
  • Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a range of people
  • Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
  • Evidence of the ability to work well both within a team and independently
  • Evidence of ability to solve problems using initiative and creativity, identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems with range of potential
