Company Description

Genomics England partners with the NHS to provide whole genome sequencing diagnostics.

We also equip researchers to find the causes of disease and develop new treatments - with patients and participants at the heart of it all.

Our mission is to continue refining, scaling, and evolving our ability to enable others to deliver genomic healthcare and conduct genomic research.

We are accelerating our impact and working with patients, doctors, scientists, government and industry to improve genomic testing, and help researchers access the health data and technology they need to make new medical discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines for everybody.

Job Description:

As a Design Researcher at Genomics England, you'll work in multidisciplinary products teams and utilise a combination of generative & evaluative methods to bring data-driven digital products and services to life.

At its core, this role is about bridging the gap between science, technology and user experience, further enabling our mission to deploy genomic testing into the NHS and ensuring that our tools and healthcare services are accessible to everyone that needs them.

Your day-to-day will involve close collaboration with clinicians, patients, data scientists and bioinformaticians, as you unearth key insights, identify user need, and design the strategies for how we deliver those needs.

You'll need an adaptable approach; selecting the right research methods to suit the problem at hand, whilst also being able to select the appropriate communication method to relay your findings / recommendations to different internal stakeholders.

This is a chance to improve the NHS through genuine digital innovation and create better healthcare experiences for millions of people in the UK.

Furthermore, you'll be joining as a key member of our newly formed (and fast-growing) Research team, which means you'll play in important role in shaping our standards and processes.

Skills and Experience for Success:

  • Previous experience in a fulltime Design Research / User Research role.
  • Worked in crossfunctional Agile teams to deliver new digital products and services.
  • Mixedmethods research skills.
  • Exposure to wide range of research techniques such as lab studies, expert evaluations, participatory design sessions, rapid prototyping, ethnographic research methods and persona development, behavioural analysis, journeys, diary studies, design probes etc.
  • Can gather and sift relevant information from a range of sources.
  • Able to expertly prioritise and plan activities, taking into account all the relevant issues such as deadlines, managing research agencies, etc.
  • Experience of employing HCI based methods and tools such as user modelling, task analysis, scenarios, use cases, wire frames, paper prototypes, labelling schemes, flow diagrams, site maps and comparative analyses.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills the ability to communicate the reasoning behind your preferred results, methods, and approaches.
  • Equally comfortable with collaborative and autonomous working.

Genomics England operates a blended working model as we know our people appreciate the flexibility. We expect most people to come into the office 2 times each month as a minimum. However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. For some people this is 1 day a quarter, for others it is several days a week. There is no expectation that staff will return to the office full time unless they want to.

The exception would be some of our roles that would require you to be on site full time e.g., lab teams, reception team.

Our teams and squads have, and will continue to, reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum.

Our office locations are Canary Wharf, Cambridge and Leeds.
