Our Press and PR Officer will:
Work as part of a seven day-a-week rota to manage our response to enquiries from international, national, regional, and local media;
Tell the very best stories about our staff and officers to continue to drive up trust and confidence in Essex Police, build unity with our communities and partners, and prove our value to the people of our county;
Deliver comprehensive media training to staff and officers;
Maintain effective working relationships with all media, including key local and national media outlets;
Provide advice and guidance to operational policing colleagues around all matters relating to the media and media relations, as well as supporting investigations;
Work with partners across the county to achieve shared communication goals;
Devise and implement media strategies to ensure a clear and co-ordinated approach to incidents or matters of media interest.

The Person

You must be diligent, professional, diplomatic and compassionate.


An excellent working knowledge of all facets of media law is an absolute essential for this role as you will be expected to provide expert support and guidance to junior colleagues and use your knowledge to inform the advice you give to policing colleagues.


You will have excellent written and verbal communications skills, as well as a good understanding of policing, and be able to identify multimedia opportunities to promote good work undertaken by Essex Police.


Evidence of telling engaging stories using content creatively, excellent interpersonal skills, preparing media strategies for complex, high-profile cases or critical incidents.

Experience working with local and national media

Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines whilst prioritising conflicting demands to ensure all tasks are completed.

Evidence of experience providing advice and guidance to colleagues about matters relating to the media.

Experience turning complex information into clear, tailored copy for specific audiences and a strong understanding of digital communications channels.

Recent and relevant communications experience.

You will need to have flexibility to work between the hours of 7am and 6pm; including weekends.


In addition, you will be expected to undertake on-call 24/7 duties, which includes overnight as part of a regular rota, which will involve attending the workplace if required.
