An exciting opportunity for a Dietetic Assistant has arisen within the Diabetes Dietitians and Adult Weight Management Teams at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.


You will work independently as part of the Nutrition and Dietetic team under the guidance of registered dietitians and after a period of competency-based training; assisting qualified staff clinically and administratively to ensure a quality service.


The post holder will be responsible for delivering structured, basic nutritional and lifestyle advice to groups of patients eg newly diagnosed at risk of diabetes, gestational diabetes and Adult Weight Management.

These groups will be delivered in hospital sites, GP practices and venues across the Northumberland area, working virtually and face to face.

The post holder will demonstrate a non judgemental manner and an understanding of local issues affecting food choices.


This post will also require you to review and follow up patients with established nutritional care plans in a clinical setting, supported by supervising dietitians.


This role involves travelling between sites in Northumberland so it is essential that the post holder has a valid driving licence and access to a car for work purposes.

The post holder will be an integral member of the Diabetes Dietitians Team working into multi disciplinary teams.


The role requires delivery of basic group education in community settings, supporting people to understand the benefits of lifestyle changes in weight and diabetes control.

The post holder will assist the dietitians with ongoing nutritional interventions, referring back to the supervising dietitian.


The role involves some non clinical tasks to support the dietetic team such as administration and supporting with audit data collection.


  • To work closely with the dietitians and members of the wider multi disciplinary teams as needed.
  • To deliver group patient education on recommended nutritional and lifestyle changes.
  • To review patient progress with existing care plans in an understanding and non judgemental manner, advising the dietitian accordingly.
  • Working under the guidance of the Dietitian to provide first line nutrition advice to patients and their families/carers in a group setting
  • To be aware of own professional limitations and report any concerns to supervising registered dietitian.
  • Update patient records in a concise, accurate and timely manner in line with Trust and departmental policy.
  • Be an active member of the team and comment on service development proposals in own work area
  • To actively participate in clinical supervision
  • To take part in student training.
