University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer two new appointments for Clinical Fellows in Sustainable Healthcare. These posts will support our Trust Green Plan and our journey towards net zero.


These posts are suitable for doctors in training (core or specialist trainees), with one post aligned to Anaesthesia and the other aligned to Medicine.

We are looking for action-focused, self-starters with enthusiasm for the topic, a drive for change, team-working skills and resilience.


Working with the senior clinical team you will support and extend a number national and locally devised projects that are already in progress.

You will be capable of managing projects both independently and under supervision, and be skilled at team working.

In anaesthesia these include, but are not limited to

  • Introduction of Reusable Airway Devices (e.g., laryngoscope blades and laryngeal mask airways) to support the establishment of a circular economy
  • Nitrous oxide reduction and introduction of cracking technology.
  • Desflurane reduction and introduction of vapour capture technology.
  • Energy switchoff in theatres
In medicine these include, but are not limited to

  • Changing prescribing practice of metered dose inhalers to dry powder inhalers, working across primary and secondary care
  • A trust wide initiative to reduce inappropriate use of examination gloves.
  • Collection and recycling of mobility aids
