Job summary:


Role Context:


The aim of English Programmes is to support the improvement of English language teaching and learning in formal and non-formal education systems.

English Programmes has the following impact areas and global programmes:

English Connects - our global online engagement with teachers and teacher educators

English and Empowerment - formal and non-formal education with two strands: Language for Resilience and English for Girls' Education.


It delivers these programmes in country through policy advice, research and insight, and the delivery of grant, co-funded and full cost recovery contracts and programmes in 50+ countries in collaboration with UK and international partners, ministries of education, education and donor agencies.


Main Accountabilities:

Strategy and planning

  • Liaise closely with leaders across English Programmes, Cultural Engagement and the Global Network to translate overarching corporate and English strategies into a high impact global English in Education offer, ensuring the plan is fully aligned to wider organisational objectives and responds appropriately to market conditions and opportunities.
  • Conduct or commission complex, comparative analyses of performance data and use this to set a global annual business plan for English in Education
Leadership & management

  • Lead development and implementation of a high quality, compliant and inclusive global programmes.
  • Provide inspiring and motivational leadership of English in Education that rolemodels the British Council's values and behaviours, and empower and enable staff to deliver excellence, whilst promoting equality, diversity and inclusion
Brand and market positioning

  • Build professional and personal networks with relevant opinionformers, stakeholders and key clients to ensure a clear understanding of their needs. Use those insights to understand current and prospective business development opportunities for English in Education and inform planning/resourcing/investment decisions.
  • Liaise closely with relevant colleagues in English Programmes and region to identify and make the business case for investment in new research and development projects for English in Education that will support increased effectiveness and efficiencies and enable the British Council to maintain competitive edge in the medium

Business development

  • Build networks and relationships with strategic clients/partners within their area of influence. Use insights to understand current and prospective business development opportunities for the British Council and inform planning/resourcing/investment decisions.
  • Lead and accountmanage specific strategic client/partner relationships within area of influence and identify and secure new strategic, incomegenerating opportunities which contribute to the achievement of agreed financial and impact targets.
  • Own and build the pipeline for area of influence, developing opportunities with identified clients and partners to deliver programmes that are financially viable and achieve our strategic KPIs
Programme management and product development

Relationship & stakeholder management

  • Personally lead and develop trust based relations with complex or key accounts/stakeholders/sponsors/partners to support the achievement of agreed commercial and impact targets for English in Education over both the short
- to medium-term.

  • Coach and mentor more junior colleagues to build their account management effectiveness.
